Many sales problems are not caused by lack of effort.
They are caused by misplaced effort.
One of the clearest examples is the seller who talks too much. They explain too early, present too broadly, and try to prove value before they fully understand what the buyer cares about.
I do not say that critically. I understand why it happens.
Sellers want to be helpful. They want to sound knowledgeable. They want the buyer to see the strength of the solution. But when a seller talks too much too soon, the conversation often becomes less valuable for the buyer.
The seller may be covering information, but they are not creating insight.
I’ve seen first meetings where the buyer shares one challenge and the seller immediately launches into a long explanation of capabilities. The buyer listens politely, but the seller misses the chance to understand the deeper issue.
Why is the problem happening?
Who is affected by it?
Why now?
What has the buyer already tried?
What would make this worth changing?
What internal resistance might exist?
Those questions create a better sales conversation than another five minutes of explanation.
The strongest sellers are not quiet because they lack expertise. They are disciplined because they know when their expertise is most useful.
They diagnose before they prescribe.
This is a major part of the Sales Conversation Structure and Discovery Execution work inside Iconic Selling.
The course helps sellers learn how to guide a conversation with purpose. It teaches them how to ask better questions, listen for buying signals, and connect their expertise to the buyer’s actual situation instead of delivering a generic pitch.
But the transformation happens when sellers practice applying it.
That is why Iconic Selling includes personal coaching from me. I work one-on-one with sales professionals to help them improve how they handle real conversations. We look at where they are rushing, where they are overexplaining, and where they can create more buyer engagement with fewer but better words.
This matters because selling is not just about knowing what to say.
It is about knowing what the buyer needs to discover.
A seller who talks too much may sound prepared.
A seller who asks the right questions earns trust.
That is a very different kind of professionalism.
